Ube allergen and dietary statement

Ube is the tuber of Dioscorea alata. It contains no nuts, no gluten and no caffeine, it is plant-derived, and Philippine Ube is Halal certified. Our Heritage Reserve powder is ube alone. Our Ani grade is ube plus a disclosed plant-derived food-grade maltodextrin carrier used in spray-drying.

This page exists because buyers need these answers before they can quote, and because the same questions get asked by people reading a label in a supermarket. Where there is no published data, it says so rather than estimating.

Declarations

Is ube a nut?

No

Ube is the tuber of Dioscorea alata, a climbing vine. It is not a nut, not a legume and not a seed. It belongs to the yam family, which is botanically unrelated to tree nuts and peanuts. Ube is sometimes described as tasting nutty, and that flavour note is the reason the question gets asked, but it has no bearing on allergen status.

Does ube contain nuts?

No

The tuber contains no nuts. Our Heritage Reserve powder is ube alone. Our Ani grade is ube plus a plant-derived food-grade maltodextrin carrier used in spray-drying, which we disclose in full on the spec sheet. Neither contains nut material. Finished products made with ube elsewhere may of course contain nuts from other ingredients.

Does ube contain gluten?

No

Ube is a tuber, not a cereal grain, so it contains no gluten. That is a compositional fact about the crop. Whether a specific finished product may be labelled gluten free in your market depends on your own facility, testing and certification, not on the raw material alone.

Is ube halal?

Yes

Philippine Ube is Halal certified. Ube itself is a plant product with no animal-derived input, and the maltodextrin carrier in our Ani grade is plant-derived.

Is ube vegan?

Yes, but check the product

The tuber and our powders are plant products with no animal-derived ingredients. Ube halaya is the common exception: the traditional recipe is cooked with condensed or evaporated milk and butter, so most ube halaya is not vegan. Ube ice cream and ube lattes are usually dairy-based for the same reason. The colour is not the dairy, the recipe is.

Does ube contain caffeine?

No

Ube contains no caffeine. An ube latte or ube tea bought in a cafe may well contain caffeine, but it comes from the espresso or tea base the drink is built on, not from the ube. An ube drink made on milk alone has none.

Is ube kosher?

Not currently certified

Ube is a plant product and compatible with kosher dietary guidelines, but we do not hold formal kosher certification today. It can be arranged for specific production batches on request.

Is ube organic?

Not currently certified

We are not certified organic. Many of our partner farms work without synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilisers, but we do not hold formal organic certification and we do not describe the product as organic. Certification is on the roadmap as we scale.

Where there is no data

Most of what circulates online about ube and health traces back to figures nobody checked, often for a different species of yam entirely. These are the questions we get asked where the honest answer is that the measurement has not been published.

Is ube low histamine?

There is no published histamine data for Dioscorea alata that we have been able to find, and we will not estimate one. Anyone managing histamine intolerance should treat ube as untested rather than as low or high.

Is ube safe for diabetics?

Ube contains 22.2 g of carbohydrate and 0.4 g of total sugars per 100 g raw, per DOST-FNRI. We can give you that composition. We cannot give you a glycaemic index, because no GI figure for Philippine ube appears in any source we have been able to verify, and the numbers circulating online do not cite one. Dietary decisions belong with a clinician who has the composition in front of them.

Can ube cause diarrhoea, or is it a laxative?

Ube contains 3.4 g of dietary fibre per 100 g raw, falling to 2.6 g boiled, per DOST-FNRI. That is a moderate amount for a starchy root. We are not aware of any clinical study of ube and digestive effects, so we state the fibre figure and stop there. Ube is eaten cooked rather than raw.

What is the nutrition panel for ube powder?

DOST-FNRI told us in writing that they hold no nutritional data for ube powder at all. The published Philippine composition tables cover the raw tuber (Food ID B020) and the boiled tuber (B021) only. Any nutrition panel on a powder product therefore has to come from the supplier's own lab work, and you should ask to see it rather than assume it exists.
