Ube Buyers in the Philippines
Philippine ube production has been falling for fifteen years. PSA recorded 21,554 tonnes nationally in 2010; by 2025 that had dropped to 12,180 tonnes from 2,317 hectares across 72 reporting provinces — a national average of just 5.26 tonnes per hectare. Research trials on Dioscorea alata reach 20 to 35 t/ha under good husbandry, so the gap is not biological. It is a coordination problem: growers who cannot find a reliable buyer stop investing in the crop.
